If you got all your major news stations through www.satellitetv.net in 2005, then you probably heard about the Ethan Allen Accident. On October 2, 2005 on Lake George at 2:55 PM, the Ethan Allen capsized.

The accident made local headlines and reports from local newspapers estimated that some 20 people (mostly seniors) died. What was even more curious was that the event happened during calm weather.

So what caused the Ethan Allen, a 40-foot glass-enclosed tourist boat to capsize on Lake George? How did it happen? What’s the truth behind the accident?

Well, after the National Transportation Safety Board was called in to investigate, it was revealed that the incident was caused by modifications and safety violations. The boat was rated to carry 50 people; however alterations that were made to this boat greatly reduced the stability of the watercraft.

When the accident occurred, because of the modifications, the boat was really only able to carry 14 passengers. There were 47 on the day of the tragedy.

On February 5, 2007 the captain and the company were indicted for the incident. However, serious charges were withheld since, at the time, no one in the company knew that their actions were violating the safety standards.
